Out Of Place

Hair Nests
Installation

H(air) Nests comprises a day-by-day collection of the artist’s hair accumulated from daily brushings in the form of nests. The hair may easily fly away by the passing of a viewer as these sculptural formations preciously nest on paper shelves without adhesion.

Hair contains a part of oneself that is intimate, unique, and personal (today's science would speak of DNA, while in Voodoo culture one’s hair is the key to possessing ones being). On the other hand, hair out of place of its origin also represents an uncanny* quality that is often taboo in certain cultures and traditions especially for females : hair must then be hidden, veiled, or shaved.

The lightness of the hair, in its vulnerability creates a tenuous meeting, between viewers and this part of me: a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of identity and the incredible lightness of being.
